The high-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) are the etiologic agents of cervical cancer and are associated to anal and oropharyngeal cancers. The presence of HPV infection in the mouth may increase by 20 times the risk of developing oropharyngeal carcinomas.

The E6 and E7 oncoproteins are responsible for the onset and maintenance of carcinogenesis induced by HR-HPVs. They represent appropriate targets for the development of diagnostic tools.

The results of tecnological research are rapresented by the identification of enzimatic activities and microorganism able to degrade contaminants in raw material and food. The identification has been performed by using both a classical microbiological approach and the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing data. Microorganism were selected based on their ability of survive and adapt to polluted environments. Growth assays and chemical and transcriptomic analysisin the presence of the pollutant were performed in order to identify the enzymes responsible for degradation.

Here a Silica Gelatin composite for removal of chromate from water solutions and the “in situ” conversion process of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) onto this material are described. All the fabrication details of this composite are also described. Additionally we also determine that chromate ions adsorption is not affected by the presence of sulfate ions and a slightly acidic pH conditions

ISAFOM-CNR, Perugia has recently developed an innovative procedure that can easily turn the waste resulting from olive oil mills into an excellent soil conditioner/organic fertilizer.

It is realized through a simplified static composting procedure conducted in gas-permeable bags with passive aeration of the biomass.

The technology is especially suited to the treatment of the humid pomace produced by “two phases” modern olive mills, ideally working in line with it.

The determination of isotope ratios using IRMS (Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry) is based on significant differences in the relationship between stable isotopes of bio-elements present in some organic molecules.

The technology exploits the fluorescence quenching mechanism dues to the presence of metal ions in solution, by a Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) extracted from a marine organism and produced as recombinant protein.  rGFP showed selectivity and sensitivity to copper ions (in the µM range) so it was used to test the possibility to design an optical sensor prototype. In addition, we decided  to validate the technology on a biological system such as closed cultivation of tomato and strawberry plants.

Glycogen storage disease type III (GSDIII or Cori/Forbes disease) is a rare metabolic disorder due to the deficiency of the Glycogen Debranching Enzyme (GDE). This is a large monomeric protein (about 170 kDa) with two distinct enzymatic activities: 4-α-glucantransferase and amylo-α-1,6-glucosidase. We have expressed the human GDE gene in bacteria, plants and in vitro root cultures (Lycopersicon esculentum, Micro-Tom). In particular, GDE was purified under native conditions from the soluble fraction of bacteria and from leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana.

A new class of non-covalent caspase-1 inhibitors. The synthesized low molecular weight non-peptidic molecules have shown neuroprotective activity and are able to cross the blood brain barrier. Such molecules are of interest to modulate the inflammatory process with potential therapeutic application for both acute and chronic neurodegenerative diseases but also for inflammatory based diseases as articular diseases, skin disorders, and bowel diseases.

The “Stazione Sperimentale di Granicoltura per la Sicilia” has developed some applications for the evaluation of morpho-colorimetric parameters of food products, by means of image analysis technology. These application software allow to obtain accurate and precise measurements of sample physical traits relating to size, shape, color and the texture, reducing erroneous assessments related to the subjective and personal visual evaluation.
